Joseph Burke works as the head of the URG Africa office in Nairobi, Kenya, and as a researcher. During his time at the Universal Rights Group, Joseph has focused on projects related to human rights and the environment, business and human rights, and technology and human rights. He is currently working on projects on international accountability mechanisms, the situation of environmental human rights defenders, and national mechanisms for implementation, reporting, and follow-up (NMIRFs).

Before joining URG, Joseph worked for Article 19 in Mexico City, and at an independent human rights research organisation. Joseph has also worked as an immigration attorney in the United States, providing legal defence to detained asylum seekers and migrants.

Joseph holds an LL.M. in Human Rights with a specialisation in International Justice from Central European University, as well as a Juris Doctor, having studied at the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law and the University of Akron School of Law. Joseph also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and Philosophy from the Ohio State University.
