Where the Council has more effectively fulfilled its mandate, delivered practical solutions, acted as a forum for building understanding and consensus, held human rights violating countries to account, and driven progress on important emerging human rights concerns, it has always coincided with a strong and diverse membership.
Over the past years, URG has become heavily involved – and often helped drive – initiatives at the HRC designed to build a better, more credible, more diverse and more inclusive membership: URG provides continuous support for the Council’s trust fund for LDCs and SIDS; lead and act as the secretariat for the Council contact group on a more diverse and inclusive Council; supports members of the contact group to press the President of the General Assembly to establish a voluntary platform for HRC candidates to present their candidatures and engage in dialogue with voting States; and continues to implement ‘yourHRC.org’ project.
