Towards a human rights-based approach to global plastic governance

The Regional Government of Catalonia and the Universal Rights Group will organise a working lunch ahead of the third session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including the marine environment, which is scheduled to take place from 13 to 19 November, with a view to discussing strategies to ensuring a human rights-based approach to plastic governance.

The format of the Policy Dialogue on plastics will be a working lunch that will take place on the 8th of November from 13h00 to 15h00 and will bring together approximately 18 key participants including State representatives, from each UN region, as well as from different political groups; UN representatives; and key civil society actors.

The Policy Dialogue will be chaired by the Regional Government of Catalonia and will start with a brief presentation by URG providing a comprehensive background of the topic, and proposing key questions for discussion.

A ‘tour de table’ discussion will then engage all participants and give them the opportunity to present their views on the subject. The Chatham House Rule will apply to promote a sincere and open discussion with the potential of finding common ground and creating bridges.
